Cloud airtime vs SIM card airtime: what is the difference?
Same call. Different place the airtime lives.
Both let you phone someone. The person you call cannot tell which one you used. The difference is where the airtime lives, and that changes more than you would expect.
SIM airtime is loaded onto a SIM card on one network. The call travels from your phone to the nearest tower and across that network.
Cloud Airtime is loaded into an account. The call travels from an app over the internet, and joins the telephone network near the person you are calling.
Side by side:
- Where it lives. SIM airtime: on one SIM, in one phone. Cloud Airtime: in your account, on any device you sign in to.
- What it needs. SIM airtime: cell signal. Cloud Airtime: Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- How calls are counted. SIM airtime: depends on the plan, sometimes per minute. Cloud Airtime with Ukutel: per second, always.
- Calling other countries. SIM airtime: usually the most expensive calls you can make. Cloud Airtime: one balance for every country, at that country's rate.
- If you lose your phone. SIM airtime: you need a SIM swap. Cloud Airtime: sign in on another phone and carry on.
- What else draws on it. SIM airtime: calls, SMS, data out of bundle, subscriptions. Cloud Airtime: calls.
- Expiry. SIM bundles often expire. Ukutel top-up airtime does not; airtime that comes with a monthly package rolls over for three months.
Neither replaces the other. Your SIM gives you mobile data and a signal where there is no Wi-Fi. Cloud Airtime gives you cheaper calls, a number that travels and a balance you can see. Most of our members keep both and use each for what it does best.
If you are unsure, the simplest test is to make the same call both ways and compare what each cost.
