How to get started with a cloud phone number in five steps
From nothing to your first call in five steps.
Setting up a new phone line used to mean a shop, a queue and a form. A cloud number takes about ten minutes on the phone you already have. Here are the five steps with Ukutel, and what to expect at each.
Step 1: Choose how to start. Take the five-day trial for R25 (about $1.52), or go straight to a package from R80 (about $4.86) a month. If a friend who uses Ukutel invited you, they may have sponsored a three-day trial for you, and you will have received a link.
Step 2: Sign up. Enter your name and your cellphone number. We send a code by SMS to confirm it is you. No paperwork to post, and no contract to sign.
Step 3: Choose your number. Pick your South African cloud number from the list. This is the number people will call and the number they will see when you call them.
Step 4: Install the app and connect it. Download the Ukutel app from the App Store or Google Play. One tap connects it to your new number. You do not have to type in any settings.
Step 5: Make your first call. Phone someone you know, from the app, over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Ask them what number they saw. Then look in the app at what the call cost, to the second.
After that
- Sign in on a second device if you want the number to ring in two places.
- Give the number to the people who should have it.
- Top up when you need more airtime. Top-up airtime does not expire.
If something does not work, it is almost always the internet connection on that device. Try the same call on Wi-Fi, and contact us if it still fails; a person will help you.
Your SIM card and your existing number are untouched throughout. You have added a line, not replaced one.
Dollar amounts are a guide, at the exchange rate of 19 October 2026 (R16.46 to the US dollar). You are charged in South African rand.
