How does a refer-a-friend airtime programme work in South Africa?

5 October 2026 · 2 minute read · by Ukutel

Here is exactly who gets paid, and how much.

"Refer a friend and earn" can mean almost anything, so here is exactly how ours works, with the numbers.

Who can take part. Any Ukutel member. You are a customer first; the link comes with your account.

What counts. Two things your team members buy:

  • The airtime that comes inside their monthly package. On the three packages that is R50, R100 or R150 (about $3.04, $6.07 or $9.11) a month.
  • Any extra airtime they top up.

What you earn.

  • 5% of the package airtime: R2.50, R5.00 or R7.50 (about $0.15, $0.30 or $0.46) per member, every month they stay.
  • 2.5% of each top-up: 63 cents on a R25 (about $1.52) top-up.

Nothing is earned on the rest of the package price, and nothing on a trial.

How deep it goes. You earn on people you invited, and on people they invited, and so on. How many levels depends on your own package: three levels on Line, six on Line+, ten on Line Max. Your package sets how deep you earn, never how much each person earns you.

How the team is arranged. Each member has four places directly beneath them. When your four are full, the next person you invite is placed under one of them. So your invites help your team, and theirs help you.

When you are paid. Earnings are calculated every day at 05:00. Once you have R50 or more, it is paid to your bank account on Friday.

A worked example. Four people join through your link on the R160 package. That is 4 × R5 = R20 a month. If each of them brings four, that is another 16 × R5 = R80. Twenty people, R100 a month.

Notice what the example shows. Your own four are worth R20 (about $1.21). The other R80 (about $4.86) depends on them doing what you did. That is the honest centre of every referral programme: it works as a team or it stays small.

Dollar amounts are a guide, at the exchange rate of 19 October 2026 (R16.46 to the US dollar). You are charged in South African rand.
