Why a referral side hustle only works as a team in South Africa
Alone: 31 people in two years. As a team: a different story.
There is a number we publish that most programmes would hide. If one Ukutel member sponsors a R5 (about $0.30) trial every single week for two years, and nobody they bring in ever does the same, they end up with about 31 people and about R155 ($9.42) a month.
We publish it because it explains the whole thing. A referral programme is not a job you do alone. It is the power of sharing and teamwork, and it is never a solo effort.
Why alone stays small. One person can only talk to so many people. Each new member is worth a few rand a month. However hard you work, you are adding in ones.
Why a team is different. If one in four of the people you bring also sponsors a trial each week, then each month there are more people sponsoring than the month before. You are no longer adding. The team is. In the same two years, the same weekly effort fills six levels.
What a team needs. Three things, and none of them is talent.
- Communication. One message a week to everyone, with one task: sponsor your R5 trial.
- Something to show. A short video a sponsor can send with the trial link, so a new person understands in a minute.
- A scoreboard. In the Ukutel app, the Earn tab shows "Your team right now": whether you sponsored this week, how many of your team did, and how many trials joined. Everyone can see where the team stands.
What kills a team. Silence in the slow months. The first year looks like nothing is happening, because most of the growth comes in the last six months. Teams that stop in month eight never see it.
This is why we call it a strategy and not a shortcut. It asks for a small thing, done every week, by enough people.
