Side hustle ideas in South Africa you can start with R5

5 October 2026 · 2 minute read · by Ukutel

R5. That is the whole starting cost.

Most lists of side hustles quietly assume you have money: a car for deliveries, stock for a stall, data and a laptop for freelancing. If what you have is a phone and very little cash, the list gets short. Here are real ones, and what each actually takes.

  • Selling a skill by the hour. Tutoring, hair, washing cars, CV typing. Costs almost nothing to start. Your income stops when you stop.
  • Reselling small goods. Sweets, airtime, cold drinks. Needs a little stock money and somewhere with people passing.
  • Referring a service you already use. Costs nothing to hold stock. Income is small per person and depends on others joining.

The third kind is where R5 (about $0.30) comes in, and here is exactly how.

Ukutel members can sponsor a friend's three-day trial for R5. Your friend gets a South African cloud number and airtime to call with, on their own phone. If they like it and take a package, they join your team, and you earn 5% of the airtime in their package each month, plus 2.5% of their top-ups.

So the "stock" for this side hustle is a R5 trial. You can pay for it from your airtime, from your Gift wallet or from your earnings balance.

Now the honest part, because lists like this usually leave it out.

  • You need to be a member yourself. Packages start at R80 (about $4.86) a month, and that includes R50 (about $3.04) of airtime you can use.
  • Not every trial becomes a member. Plan on a minority joining.
  • One member on the middle package earns you R5 a month. A meaningful amount needs a team, where the people you bring also sponsor trials.

Our own published plan is one R5 trial a week. Alone, that reaches about 31 people in two years. With a team doing the same, it is a different picture.

Dollar amounts are a guide, at the exchange rate of 19 October 2026 (R16.46 to the US dollar). You are charged in South African rand.
